Veteran politician and former General Secretary of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), Amna Ally, passed away on Saturday at the age of 69. She died at 10:54 AM at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where she had been receiving dialysis treatment. Ally had been battling chronic kidney disease and a heart condition.
A retired educator, Ally had dedicated over 40 years of her life to the PNCR. She became politically inactive following the party’s internal leadership changes after the 2020 general and regional elections, notably distancing herself after Joseph Harmon lost the leadership race. Several months ago, she formally resigned from the PNCR and openly criticized current party leader Aubrey Norton.
Despite stepping back from active politics, Ally maintained strong personal ties with many PNCR parliamentarians who were selected following the 2020 elections. However, the party has yet to issue an official statement on her passing.
Among those who paid tribute was PNCR Executive Member Ganesh Mahipaul, who shared an emotional message:
“She was a gem. I will miss her dearly and deeply. I didn’t get to say goodbye, and though we had our differences, I never stopped loving her. I’ll miss you. Rest in peace. Amna Ally is no more.”
From across the political aisle, Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, also expressed her condolences:
“RIP Amna Ally. We sat on opposing sides in Parliament and she was a former Minister of Human Services. Across the floor, we had many feisty and fiery exchanges, but beyond that we had a cordial relationship. Even through her recent illness, we had conversations on social issues. We each held firm to our political beliefs—she with the PNC, and I with the PPP—but we maintained a simple and respectful relationship.”
Ally leaves behind a legacy of public service, political dedication, and resilience, remembered fondly by colleagues and adversaries alike.
