Guyana Golden Jaguars Kick Off Training Camp in Costa Rica Ahead of World Cup Qualifiers
The Guyanese senior men’s national football team, the Golden Jaguars, have commenced a vital training camp in Costa Rica as they prepare for two decisive matches in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.
The team will take on Nicaragua away on June 6, followed by a ‘home’ fixture against Montserrat on June 10. Based on recent precedent, the latter match is likely to be hosted in Barbados.
Now fully assembled in Costa Rica with their complete squad and technical staff, the Golden Jaguars are engaged in high-intensity training sessions. The camp officially began on Wednesday and will continue until the team departs for Managua on June 4.
In addition to regular training, the squad is scheduled to play a friendly against one of Costa Rica’s professional club teams to sharpen match fitness.
Head Coach Wayne Dover expressed confidence in the team’s preparation and the benefits of the Costa Rican environment ”This camp provides the ideal atmosphere to fine-tune our tactical and physical approach,” he stated. “The players have responded positively, and we are confident in our ability to perform strongly in both upcoming fixtures.”The Golden Jaguars are entering a critical phase of their World Cup qualifying journey. With two matches remaining in the second round of CONCACAF qualifiers, securing maximum points is imperative if they are to keep their hopes alive of progressing to the final qualification stage. Their next opponent, Nicaragua, currently tops Group D after comfortable wins over Montserrat (4–1) and Belize (4–0). The June 6 encounter will take place at the Nicaragua National Football Stadium in Managua.
Guyana sits third in the group, having started their campaign with a 2–0 loss to Panama in Panama City. However, they bounced back with a convincing victory over Belize at the Wildey Turf in Barbados.
Following the Nicaragua clash, Guyana will face Montserrat on June 10. Realistically, only two wins from their final fixtures will give the Golden Jaguars a shot at topping the group — the only position that secures progression to the final round of qualifiers.
The last round will feature group winners alongside three lower-ranked teams from CONCACAF Nations League A and B. These teams will compete for three of the confederation’s automatic berths at the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup 2026, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
